For applicants from other countries, Avant has had to suspend recruitment of Registered Nurses for their US program. This is due to the unavailability of visas under the permanent residency visa category due to Immigration retrogression.

What does Retrogression Mean?
By law, there is a quota or limit on the number of people who can be granted permanent residency visas (green cards) in any given year. Retrogression refers to the situation we face currently where the quotas have been overused and visa numbers become unavailable. It is not clear as to when visas will become available again but it seems real progress will not be made until 2010.

There continues to be a shortage of nurses here in the US with the Department of Health and Human Services advising that more than a million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2020 to address the country's severe nursing shortage.

As a founding member of AAIHR (The American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment), Avant continues to be involved in lobbying towards a resolution as we have been since retrogression began and while progress has been slow in recent months we remain committed to seeking a resolution.  This year the AAIHR convention is located in Washington D.C. where they are planning to spend time on Capital Hill lobbying for relief.

If you do not already hold the NCLEX or the CGFNS and wish to continue to move your process along to be ready when retrogression lifts, you may wish to consider taking the NCLEX or CGFNS examinations (both are not required and so if you plan to do one the NCLEX is a better choice) and then you will be closer to coming to the US once Avant is recruiting again.

  • For Information on the CGFNS Certification process go to www.cgfns.org
  • For information on the English requirements and exam centers go to www.ielts.org
  • For Information on the US Boards of Nursing go to www.ncsbn.org

There are many good products around for NCLEX review such as Kaplan, Saunders, and NCSBN courses for NCLEX and CGFNS preparation.

If you have completed an application or submitted a resume, we will keep this on file for the US program and be in contact with you once retrogression has been lifted.
